Shelly pulled out of the parking lot, her tires kicking up the dusty gray gravel as she sped out onto the lonesome rural highway. I, on the other hand, would not be so lucky. To leave Rensselaer at this time on a Friday meant hitting the now-inescapable traffic strangling Chicago’s freeways. No commuters or basketball fans headed north to watch the Bulls play at the United Center to blame. Just a break in the wintry weather drawing people to the city in pursuit of a life in sharp contrast to what I had just witnessed at Victoria’s.

I had been off the grid for more than five hours, and by now the only thing more clogged than the Dan Ryan Expressway was my voicemail. One message in particular came as a shock.

“Hey, Jordan. It’s Nate. Are we still on for tonight? I have to be up early. But I’m free around six-thirty or seven if you’re still up for drinks. Let me know.”

Damn, that was two hours ago. He might have made other plans by now. Don’t overthink it, Jordan. Just text him back.

Got your message. Driving back from Indiana. 7 is good. Pick a spot. See you soon.
